What is the easiest method to train a horse to trailer load?

It is hard ti explain, much easier to show someone how to do it, but I will try.

The first thing you do is walk your horse up to the trailer. Some horses have a hard time with that others it is not a problem. If your horse is okay with walking up to the trailer, ask him to walk into the trailer, standing at his side with slack in the lead.

If he goes in great! He probably won’t. So if he doesn’t, DO NOT start beating on his rear to make him go in. Let him rest a second by the trailer. Back him up and start working on other things he already knows like lounging. It should be something that is work for him though, not like flexing his neck or standing exercises. The idea is to make away from the trailer work, and the trailer a resting place.

After working for a few minutes loung him toward the trailer opening at a walk. Stand at his side and ask him to go in. If he takes even half a step or even leans inside the trailer praise him. Let him sit for thirty seconds or so, ask him one more time to enter the trailer (you do this by directing his head to the trailer door). If he steps closer let him rest another thirty seconds, and repeat. If he backs up or won’t even lean in the right direction, back him up some more, then do the lounging again for a few minutes.

Keep this up. Every time there is progress, no matter how small, reward him by letting him stand there. If he steps in at all follow the same proceedure. The first few or more times he is loaded he should be allowed to back out again. This way he will understand that the trailer is not a trap and he will be able to get out again.

If you are patient and consistant, you will soon have a horse that willingly will walk into any trailer, and many other places, because he will trust your leadership.
