Trains leave clean harvest or dust / dirt?

I came on a ship full of HO & O Scale Trains. What happens is they are pretty dirty and dusty. If there's one thing I learned from Antiques Roadshow is usually best to leave most things in the state in which they find rather than trying to clean them, which decreases / Destroy its value (especially if you do not know what you're doing, like me) Thanks for any help

That depends on the material of the element. If it is metal or plastic, (some old wood or cardboard train!) should be able to withstand a water cleaning and minor paper towel, etc., provided dried and patted dry rather quickly. Do not rub or scrub them so forcefully. If the paint is at least slightly glossy, which will help repel water during cleaning. Dust and dirt are not a part of its value. Q tips and a soft toothbrush are widely used tools a good cleaning. As always, try to clean up a place that is not perceptible at first.
