Virginia Tech shooting: Does the media bear any responsibility?

The media has fixated on this event 24 hours a day for over a week. They have interviewed anyone and everyone who knew the perpetrator, or knew of him, or didn’t know him but knew someone who knew him, or experts who have nothing to do with him. They have dug up Columbine and other similar events. We have had the latest developments sprinkled into recaps of all the facts.

It seems to me that a disturbed person, looking to “make a statement” and “go out in blaizing glory” would be very interested in the details of such an event and might even learn to improve on the “kill ratio” to get even more coverage. Basically, the media rewards the perpetrator with a solid week of coverage and decades of fame.

So I ask, does the media bear any responsibility in the Virginia Tech shooting? And is this coverage likely to encourage copy-cat events?

If you are going to address the question of media responsibility, then you can’t forget the increasing violence of TV and Movies in the land of “make believe” so kids don’t differentiate between real and the dead hero on a talk show the next day.. Video games where you can kill over and over again without consequence.
I agree – the sensationalizing of the event nauseates me and I have stopped watching anything connected with it. I remember the families and victims in prayer. It is to be expected that they would dig up everything back 20 years with this – heck, they still haven’t let Elvis die!
Will they ever take social responsibility for their actions – no – they want to sell.
