Crown Vic Police Interceptor: Newest Ford's Green Machine

Ford Motor Co. announced that the 2008 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor will be transformed into a green machine which is a flexible fuel vehicle running on gasoline or E85 ethanol.

Ford is currently the largest manufacturer of police vehicles more than 80 percent of the market. And on the way to vehicles environmentally friendly, the automaker is expanding its fuel technology alternative to its fleet. And the Ford Crown Victoria does not fall within the scope of the exception. Ford felt the need to provide alternative fuel fleets, including customer police.

"The ability to offer an E85 capable vehicle to our police customers is significant," said Gerald Koss, marketing Ford's fleet. "Many municipalities and states across the country are encouraging, if not mandated, that the police and other vehicles in the fleet of existing government to use alternative fuel sources. We can now help our customers in the police fleet to achieve this goal. "

Automaker will give credit for EPACT mandates and increased flexibility in choosing fleet vehicles and purchase of government agencies that include FFV Crown Vic Police Interceptors on their annual plan of the Department of Energy. Ford is now accepting orders for the E85-powered Crown Vic Police Interceptor. Vehicle production is to begin this May.

"Ethanol is one way we can help reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil" Koss said. "In addition to our flexible fuel vehicles, fleets looking to go green can also choose from two hybrid models, the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner, and a number of Ford PZEV (partial zero emissions vehicles) models.

Ford also announced it has acquired a certification 50 states of all Ford and Mercury 2008 flexible fuel models of Passenger Cars. The current flexible fuel vehicle (FFV) line of products includes Crown Victoria, Ford F-150, and the Mercury Grand Marquis. Achieving this certification means that the automaker FFV meet both emissions rules set by the federal government and the state of California.

California's standards present unique challenges for FFVs. Moreover, by complying with both standards, Ford could sell its product lines throughout the country, fewer constraints on some non-compliant vehicles. This fact will also limit complexities legal scholar. In an effort to differentiate its flexible fuel vehicles from standard gasoline vehicles, the automaker will begin on equipping the E-85 capable vehicles with yellow gas caps. The placement of the covers are commence later this year. Ford has delivered more than two million FFVs on the road. In addition, the Detroit automaker has pledged to make half of its production capable of running with alternative fuels by 2012. This is when the necessary fuel and infrastructure are in place.
