Artists, Painters Custom … HELP! What do I put in a custom painted mailbox to stop and prevent further Chipping?

The painted lady who is deceased, so we're not sure what type of paint used. It is absolutely beautiful, but has some chips in it, and we to know what type of clear coat to put on it? Metal mailbox all is painted with a scene similar to the paintings of Thomas Kinkade, the mailbox so that all should be covered. Thanks in advance! Yes, be used outside ……. sun, rain, snow, ice ….!

I consider that you are using this mailbox outside … if that's the case – in an area unconspicuous (eg bottom) try a few different coats of clear. If you have painted for use off I guess that probably has a urethayne (sp?) or a lacquer finish – Stay away from clear acrylic sheets, and cracking with fluctuating temperatures. lacquers are also some yellow with age. You can also try a epoxy coating – thicker and more durable than a finishing spray, but be sure to read the instructions carefully. good luck
