A utility knife works the best for me. They are more durable than box cutters which are flimsy and for some harder cardboard boxes they will flex which is a hazard. It also has many uses for instance wrapping presents way Faster Than scissors, even edgeing the lawn and clearing the unwanted groth between concrete cracks.
