In making blood agar plates, why is it that human blood is not recommended?
Blood agar plates enriched media used to differentiate bacteria based on their hemolytic properties. Sheep blood was added to the blood agar base. How is it that human blood is not recommended?
Mainly because human blood is difficult to obtain in quantity for the preparation of media. Even if there is not shortage microbiological hazard to handle large amounts of blood (HIV, Hepatitis, etc) as an ingredient. Using sheep blood carries much less of a health risk.
