What is the greater evil: the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, or the imprisonment of the United States of Japanese Americans?
Both are horrific events in evil. However, the bombing of Pearl Harbor was a military attack, targeting civilian militias, but not enemies. The use of surprise and subterfuge has always been an accepted art of war. The imprisonment of Japanese Americans, however, although on a smaller scale, may be worse in the type. Before jumping on me, yes, more people died at Pearl Harbor. But his imprisonment was the act of a nation imprisoning its own people without any justifiable reason. Think about what is worse before U.S. preemptive strike against Iraq, or if the police suddenly burst into his home tonight and shuttled away from Alaska, simply because you are black or Latino or woman.
Totally agree with you, the U.S. government has always taken the road to punish the innocent while allowing the guilty free. The military attack at Pearl Harbor was necessary because of U.S. policies to strangle Japan's lifeline in the South Pacific. Imprison U.S. citizens because of their heritage was a crime against humanity. And the biggest crime was the confiscation of Japanese-American private property and the supply of these goods to greedy investors who bribed the politicians. And then to make things work the government pays for the goods stolen at a rate of about ten cents, saying it would simply not be just to make the property stolen from politicians.
