Transition remote Infrastructure Management – ITIL approach
As the manager of IT infrastructure, which has been questioned for its CIO look beyond the horizon and water test of remote infrastructure management.
Cost is clearly a key factor for the CIO and infrastructure move IT services remotely (using a Remote Control outsourcing service provider or creating a shared services environment) will provide the cost of arbitration evident.
You realize that is only a matter of time before your company joins the bandwagon of high seas for their infrastructure services. You need to prepare for the next obvious question. What areas of IT infrastructure are best suited to advance a framework for remote services? What combination or remote and onsite services will give you the right cost and performance benefit?
The key step here is to understand the details, complexity and performance of their existing infrastructure components. A common mistake at this stage is to jump headlong into a remote management strategy without a detailed picture of how infrastructure elements are interrelated and that their great cost "packages" are.
Mapping of the current teams in the following matrix is a useful first step.
The matrix rates the relative importance of IT infrastructure components in terms of its impact on business is, how important is the segment in alignment with business goals and direction?
It also measures the difficulty in relocating components in terms standardization / investment in technology and the impact on people.
Can also be used to compare the relative savings of the different areas of services. This also provides a framework for you to prioritize which parts of the landscape of the infrastructure can be moved away.
While this analysis is useful to reach a high level of understanding of which segments can be relocated and the cost savings, there are pitfalls to the "distance", whether the structure of your current equipment and processes are not conducive.
While there are many ways you can determine that current reference, a good measure to check if its current state is favorable towards the "distance" is its alignment with ITIL.
ITIL (IT infrastructure library) is used increasingly in the last decade as a framework to align IT services and has been found to produce significant benefits to the adapters. While there are obvious benefits, such as structured teams adequate job descriptions and aligning with business, there is increasing evidence that the ITIL framework helps in making their IT infrastructure offshore-able '.
If the management of the infrastructure is efficient and structured, moving to a remote management can be a challenge. This is due to the transfer of knowledge the new provider / remote equipment is essential to the success of the project, but the information and business knowledge is not documented, there are many possibilities that the new team will struggle to provide high quality service. This may surprise some who may argue that "the supporting infrastructure is only dependent on knowledge IT components (operating system, hardware, etc, but the fact that practical knowledge of business context is a key component of infrastructure services. It may not be an exaggeration to say that understanding and support of IT infrastructure has a critical dependence on the understanding of the application and business environment it supports.
Much emphasis ITIL RCCA (root cause and corrective actions) and a sound RCCA process is key to understanding its infrastructure and its peculiarities. This problem of ITIL knowledge management tool is essential not only for the transfer to the remote computer, but also ensures that you continue to understand and monitor the performance of new equipment based on how well they get to the root causes of perception and sustainable long-terms of the resolution.
The trend analysis as part of problem management is another useful mechanism for knowledge transfer. The new team gets a point of view of the issues historical and current trends. Trend analysis also provides a good basis for deciding where to focus key resources.
Proper application Database CMDB ensures that documents the black box "critical infrastructure configurations. The understanding and maintenance of custom configurations that optimize the performance of applications running on the servers is an important aspect of knowledge transfer to the remote computer and can ensure the success of transition.
To summarize, the ITIL framework is not only an effective framework to improve IT performance, but also provides an excellent basis for evaluating remote infrastructure management. A quicker implementation of ITIL processes and de-humanized to an extent, so is more supportive and ready to move it away. In conclusion, ITIL approach in combination with the matrix of 'offshoreability' framework may be essential first steps to move to a remote part of supporting infrastructure.
